Project: Complete Flooring Replacement-Jo-Ann Fabrics and Crafts Mountain View, CA
Project summary: QSI was requested to complete a VCT flooring replacement at above specified location. Scope of work consisted of pre-project prep including calcium chloride testing, as well as relative humidity testing, utilizing a humidity probe to determine if moisture was contributing to existing flooring conditions, as well as to ensure new install would not be adversely affected by any elevated moisture levels. Also performed was the installation of moisture barrier to the entire sales floor, and lastly replacement of VCT throughout the store.

Main challenges: Main challenges included working with Jo-Ann Fabrics to help determine LLD versus Jo-Ann responsibility with regards to moisture issues with the concrete slab of the structure. All work was required to be completed during the overnight hours, so close coordination with store team members was essential.
Project partners/subcontractors: QSI worked with (4) vendor partners on this project: the organization that completed independent testing of the concrete slab, the flooring team, electrical contractor for minor disconnects and re-connects, and the supplier for our gondola skates which are necessary for fixture moves throughout the project.
Method/process: After initial moisture tests revealed that the store’s concrete slab did have elevated moisture levels, it was determined that the replacement process would also need to include the installation of a moisture barrier to ensure the new flooring would not be adversely affected by moisture levels/high water table in the area. Upon completion of initial demo and the install of the moisture barrier, the new VCT flooring was installed throughout sales floor, storage areas, and restrooms. Crews were also responsible for cove base replacement throughout and minor electrical modifications.
Results: Overall Jo-Ann Fabrics and Crafts Corporate, as well as at the store level, and the property LLD were very pleased with the end result of our efforts, and the timeliness of the entire project.
Client profile: Jo-Ann Fabrics is a national leader in the specialty retailing of crafting, sewing, and decorator products. Jo-Ann was founded in 1943, and now operates approximately 800 stores throughout the United States.
