Project: Hyatt Waikiki T-Mobile Wi-Fi Installation
Project summary: Site was surveyed with a T-Mobile Engineer to determine the location of all the equipment, cabling and electrical needs and challenges. Once work was approved site preparation started with core drilling concrete between floors and installing conduit for the data and electrical. The next phase was installation of the cat5e and fiber for all locations. The final phase was the termination and certification of all cabling. Site also had to be walked multiple times throughout the project to ensure the hotels aesthetics were being taken into consideration.
Location: Honolulu, HI
Job size: 250 cat5e data drops, over 56,000 feet of cat5e and 12,000 feet of fiber
Project dates: Site was surveyed in November of 2004, work was approved and began in February 2005 and completed in June of 2005
Main challenges: Working around the hotel guests and taking their stay and comfort into consideration. Coordinating work on different floors at different times while ensuring all work was not intrusive to the hotel and their guests. Communicating and managing technicians with a 5 hour difference in time zones. A daily reporting spreadsheet was created to reflect the work that was completed. In addition, to help manage timelines, the spreadsheet reflected what was expected to be completed and at what times.
Project partners/subcontractors: Quality Solutions, Inc. utilized a local subcontractor to survey and complete the cabling over the 3-4 month time frame. Throughout the project there was anywhere from 12-16 technicians working at the hotel at any given time.
Method/process: The central theme for this project was staying organized and having timelines in place and expected completion times for each piece of the project.
Results: Given the extensive scope of work, the project was completed in a timely manner as set forth at start-up. There were minimal change orders given the size and complexity of the project. As well, this showed that we were able to catch most unforeseen issues during the survey process.
